Tom manages Achieve’s website and online communications. Tom has dedicated his career to transforming education through the use of technology. Before joining Achieve, he served as manager of the National School Boards Association’s (NSBA) Technology Leadership Network, a consortium of tech-savvy school districts. He also served as marketing communications manager at the National Association of Elementary School Principals (NAESP), launching Before the Bell e-newsletter. He served on the Academy for Educational Development’s (AED) LearnLink project, which delivered communications technology to learning centers in developing regions on behalf of USAID. Tom spent nearly a decade at Public Broadcasting Service (PBS) headquarters, serving as a point person on K-12 instructional programming to stations, schools, and state departments of education, and contributing teacher content to PBS Online.
Tom is a past Presidential Fellow and Phi Beta Kappa graduate (bachelor’s in History) of Hamline University in St. Paul, Minnesota, and is a native of Grand Marais, Minnesota on the North Shore of Lake Superior. He was co-valedictorian of Cook County High School Class of 1983. Tom spent two years in Ely, Minnesota, studying at Vermilion Community College. He has done some graduate study at George Washington University and Marymount University, and he completed the Washington Semester in American Government at American University. Tom began his career interning at the Commission on the Bicentennial of the United States Constitution, a United States Senator’s office, and at the Minnesota Chamber of Commerce. He also worked for Twin Cities Public Television.
